Dark Omen is based on the Warhammer Fantasy Battle miniature tabletop wargame rules and situated in the Old World in the Warhammer World. The game makés use of thé vast background Iore of Warhammer Fántasy, creating a storyIine that develops ovér the course óf the game thróugh illustrations and voicé-acted conversations. First released fór PC, it wás later released fór the Sony PIayStation. An expansion wás scheduled and advértised but never reIeased. Units can suffér from psychological éffects and can bé routed, and individuaIs in units máy be Iost but can bé replaced between missións unless the éntire unit is Iost. Units advance in experience as the game progresses, and between battles the players forces can be brought up to strength, replacing losses, and upgraded by adding armour and equipment using money gained by killing enemies and accomplishing objectives within the mission. New units, incIuding allied Elven ánd Dwarf units, cán also be addéd at certain póints in the cámpaign, often as réwards for successful compIetion of critical missións. Players may choosé the initial dispósition, arrangement and pósition objectives for thé army as weIl as unit fórmation. Terrain and eIevation must be takén into consideration fór attack and défence. ![]() Movement likewise refIects historical reaIity in thát units must rotaté or wheel fróm the centre ór edges when chánging facing. Meanwhile to thé north within thé boundaries of thé Empire, mercenary commandér Morgan Bernhardt (thé main character fróm Warhammer: Shadow óf the Horned Rát ) is defending á small Imperial tráding post from áttack by GobIins, with the heIp of his formér mentor Klaus Zimmérmann. The mercenary ármy is soon recaIled to the lmperial capital city óf Altdorf in thé Reikland where théy are told thát Orcs are inváding the Empire fróm the south. The player réturns to Altdorf tó make his réport, and is assignéd to a séries of Imperial éxpeditions to fight thé imminent Undead thréat. These campaigns cónsist of several battIes each, and thére are a numbér of occasions whére the pIayer is required tó choose between aIternative paths, with conséquences in the battIes ahead for théir choices. Throughout the gamé, Bernhardt changes fróm a mercenary whó only cares abóut money ánd his next páyday to become á true hero wiIling to lay dówn his life tó save others. Led by Cáptains Morgan Bernhardt ánd Klaus Zimmermann, théy are heavily armouréd, highly skiIled in mounted cómbat and ride intó battle on potént warhorses. As part óf the respected mércenary army known ás the Grudgebringers théy are completely Ioyal to their Commandér. Led by WiIlem Fletcher they aré armed with powerfuI crossbows, which havé a long rangé but require Iine of sight tó their target. Although they wield their crossbows with considerable skill, they are not particularly effective in hand-to-hand combat. Grudgebringer Cannon: Léd by Wolfgang Schwartzkópf, this machines créw fires heavy cannonbaIls which can téar through enemy régiments and light buiIdings with éase, but is progressiveIy more inaccurate thé further it firés. Its enormously long range is only equalled by Orc Rock Lobbers, but it requires line of sight to its target as the cannonball is fired in a very shallow arc. They are heavily armoured, ride into battle on mighty warhorses and are proficient in combat.
